Here's the finished document camera. It can take 10 mega pixel photos of an open book about 5 seconds a page allowing for the user to turn the page.

LED lights are bright, white, and very importantly cool.

Plexi lids keep docs flat when needed, but can be removed when desired for really fast page changing.

Height is perfect for easy viewing of camera display, and still convient to work the document.

Camera and lights do double duty, so the total project cost is less than $50

Well I hate to admit mistakes.... but my previous angled design worked... but it's main flaw was that the angled platform kept me from doing simple vertical adjustments easily.

So this design corrects that flaw and the added legs that is perfect for viewing through the camera's display.

All that is left is to mount the 2nd light and paint the unit.

New direct melt casting torch

Well I change my plans a bit...

I now plan to use direct melting with a propane and compressed air melting torch .

the metal will be held in the small crucible & holders that you see laying on the top of the stool .

I've got to make a fire brick stand to take the place of the wooden stool of course :-)

I bought the german made casting torch from Otto Frei. it uses a standard air compressor and a standard propane tank like you would find on a back yard grill.

Properly adjusted , one can achieve a 4000 f degree reduction flame . This enable a master to quickly melt metal without having to heat a whole furnace just to melt a few ounces of metal. The crucible gets heated along with the metal and its small scale feels safer... at least in my mind.

Sorry that we are a little behind...

This weekend the following missions are being accomplished:

1) Christina has college tests... sorry that it impacts delivery... but you can't say we didn't warn you :-)

2) Yesterday Christina moved into the house I grew up in. I hate moving! But in big picture this is AWESOME. She will now be able to make and package wax from the shop under her living quarters.... rather than driving to my house. Working a little each evening will once again be possible.

3) WillowProducts's wax shop is moving to same location today. Good news is that over the 5 years since inception, we've made the shop a) compact b) efficient ad possible c) mobile and easy to move.
We are moving now.... just taking a break. It will be up and running by the end of the day and Christina should be making wax tomorrow after the day job.

4) This will free my shop up for my own artistic endeavors. That may mean nothing for those who don't know me, but after YEARS of devotion to helping others with their art ( by providing our product of love), I will now be able to get on with mine... yeah I said it... deal with it :-) . Everyone who knows me, know that statement was just for fun... so desk with it :-) oops I did it again.

5) Stay turned... once today's dust settles a bit then I'll be shooting a video on my newest sculpting station. A new DIY take on the classic Art Horse.

New product packaging

While I know it doesn't really improve the product itself, here's the new custom formed heatsealed product packaging for our waxed.

The front has a checkbox for product name and some photos of artists who have made art using our stuff. Selecting the photos was really hard .... but with limited room a true requirement.

The top and bottom of the 4mil thick bag are double heat sealed with ths product card protected inside.

The back of the card has safety precautions and a brief company history.

I think it adds a bit of class and fun to the packaging not mention improved function and speed to our packaging.

11 methods to smooth and polish wax.

Here's 11 methods to smooth and polish wax. There are probably many others as artist tend to be very resourceful folks indeed!

A really great online resource for wax sculpting is www.theclubhouse1.NET   In order to get to the "Sculptor's Forum" you'll need to create an account, but there are 4000 members all posting their amazing work. Just use type "+wax +polish" and you should find many posts and photo's to boot. And there is so much more. Many materials, techniques, themes, etc. From novice to pros.

There are 3 main categories: Mechanical, Chemical, and Heat.

All these techniques take a little practice. Doing some practice runs on some doodles is highly recommended before you jump to a piece that you've invested a lot of time on.

Mechanical Polishing:

1) My favorite is polishing under cool ( not cold) water with t-shirt material. Scrub with cotton t-shirt material or Panty hose while holding the piece under running water. Takes a little elbow grease, but is very controllable and stable.

2) To speed things up a bit on #1 above, apply Fast Orange hand cleaner or toothpaste to the cloth to capitalize their fine polishing particles. You can also use polishing compound or buffing compound available at all auto parts houses or departments.

3) Using an old electric toothbrush with toothpaste under running water might be worth trying!

4) Wet sand using sanding sponges or sandpaper.

5) Steel wool under running water.

6) Use sandpaper dusted with baby powder. 400 grit paper with baby powder generously applied to prevent clogging of sandpaper is reported to leave a silky smooth and shiny surface. I haven't tried it yet but felt obligated to report it. Those that have swear it is awesome! Use a dust mask if you try it!

Chemical Polishing: Always test on a scrap piece to see the effect. Also so of these could affect your mold material, so again... always test for compatability of the materials you use.

7) While I don't personally recommend them, many artists use chemicals like lighter fluid which has a fast affect. But I don't like handling such extreme chemicals and they can soften the surface for what seems like forever. Naptha works too, but be careful not to let it penetrate too deep.

8) Here's the recipe for a great homemade polish for any wax:
Denatured alcohol, PGA or Vodka    4-5 parts
Castor oil    1 part
Castor oil can be purchase at health food stores or pharmacy. It's very inexpensive. PGA or Everclear can be substituted for the denatured alcohol and is available from liquor stores. With a little effort, when applied to a soft cotton cloth, it will remove scratches and give you a very smooth and shiny sheen.Just be sure the wash your hands well since castor is used as a natural laxative. Also wash if from the wax to make sure it doesn't interfere with your casting materials. A quick compatability test is well worth the time investment.  Alcohol alone works, but takes longer and more effort. You can also try replacing the Castro with dish detergent.

Heat or Flame Polishing:

9) For larger pieces , flame polishing can so amazing things. Using a squeeze bottle alcohol torch. This takes a little practice, but basically the flame is just wisked across the surface of the wax and the surface will become smooth and shiny. My blog photos feature a "surfer" by Rick Force that shows what flame polishing can do. Tricky, but a great technique to know... it's been used on acrylics and plastics for decades. Of course if you hold it to long, you could end up with a puddle.

10) Same basic technique as above but using a mini butane torch like those used for brazing and soldering. They are very inexpensive at home improvement stores. Get one with a tiny but active flame.

11) A "secret" of many wax artists is to use a 3m super fine sanding sponge and an alcohol lamp. The corner of the sponge is quickly waved across the lamp to get it hot enough to slighly melt the wax. the sponge is then quickly and lightly swiped across the wax. Of course you must use extreme care not to set the sponge on fire or burn yourself. Practice, practice, practice.

Works better than I thought it would!
All the texture on the surface of this block was done with 1 loading of pen.

Admittedly, I had to pass the pen over the flame ad I worked, but only for a second at a time.

I'll shoot a video soon.

All is done but the testing!

This photo shows the copper tip mounted to a wooden handle with 1 tiny nut and bolt.

Since this is a tool to be used with a very light touch it should be fine.

It's important for the tip to be held mechanically rather than glued or bonded since the repeated heating of the tip would likely cause failure... besides I don't want to breath heated epoxy or crazy glue. Just call me old fashioned!

Now to make some wax bullets and find my alcohol lamp!

While doing that last post it occurred to me that this design could readily be attached to the shaft of a soldering iron.

Control the iron with a rheostat or dimmer control and you might have a functional electro-waxer!

Did I mention how soft the copper tube is? :-)

I drilled a .250 hole about .375 from the top of the slit and then cut away the top of the tube with a small side-cutter. It cut like soft plastic!

I pushed a brass tube inside the copper just to help hold its shape while I filed the soft copper as you see in this photo.

To finish the build and test, I'll fit a wooden dowel inside tube and then secure it with either a small rivet or bolt. A very small pipe clamp would be functional, though certainly not as attractive.

If the proof-of-design goes well, my next one will be made of brass... or know that I look at it the form could have just as easily been cut from flat sheet and then rolled to close the small section.

Now the top of the cut is pushed almost closed to create a fine flow of wax.

The soft copper is soooooo easy to form.... almost toooooooo easy !!!

Next I'll drill holes to create the chamber to load the wax.

Here the 3/8" cooper tubing is cut to length and the working end cut and ground to shallow angle. This will allow the wax to flow in a controlled manner.

I'll do a video soon to show how versatile this little baby is.

You can stand, you can sit. It adjusts in/out and up/down. It tilts in toward you, or out and away. The multiposition vise works in harmony.

It's light enough to pickup and move anywhere. And because the work and your position is stable and so perfectly adjustable, keeping good posture is very natural!

And best of all, since I already had the vise, it only cost $20 .

My next DIY project... A homemade crucible furnace.

Here's the start of my attempt to make a miniature bottom fired crucible furnace.

The atmospheric burner is designed to pull in cool air from the venturi effect produced by the jet of propane fuel which it uses to produce the flame.

The flame will be directed into the bottom of the stainless tube body which will be lined with ceramic fiber refractory. The graphite crucible will be suspended by a refractory plate at the top of the tube.

I haven't a clue whether this arrangement will work or not... It seems plausible, but only finishing it and testing it will decide its design merit.

I'll have to give it a rest until next weekend, but I'll post as much as I can!

Back to work on a lost cast wax

Well, the desire to make a modeling wax for small scale metal casting has bit me again.

Goals:

1) Must be opaque so details are easy to see.

2) Must model well enough to do additive modeling.

3) When cool, it must be hard enough to allow subtractive carving.

4) Must be stiff , but not brittle.

5) Must flow well enough to allow steam dewaxing to remove most of wax before burnout.

6) Must burn out clean enough to allow good surface on metal castings.

and those are just the major traits... As you can see it's not a small challenge.

But to help, I finally found an affordable laboratory nutation mixer to help... yea!!! EBay RULES!

More to come when something worth reporting comes along.

Thanks to all those kind souls who are finding a way to help our neighbors (not to mention suppliers) in Nashville and all middle TN ... whether by making donations to the American Red Cross or in things as simple as a prayer or kind thought .

WillowProducts and the Tinkerage.net survived the 15 inches of rain, partially by the Grace of God and partially by being located away from the rivers that flooded thousands in middle TN, the worst being in Nashville and it's suburbs.

And the bad news for many is that they lost nearly all their personal property, many losing their life or a loved one. Unlike a tornado or house fire which insurance covers with replacement values, flood insurance has to be purchased through the federal government. Most homeowners don't have it because of cost, difficulty in getting coverage, and lack of knowledge.

For them, they'll be stuck oweing a bank for a house which is now uninhabitable due to structural damage and mold, pretty much the same as Katrina victims experienced.

If you can help by making financial donations, then please do so. If you can't do that, then say a prayer. If you can't do that, then think kind thoughts. If you can't do that then please re-evaluate your importance in the physical world.

We've been so busy.

Congratulations to Jake are in order, as he completed his degree and graduated from Trevecca!

We've got caught up on some very large orders and while we still have at least 1 big one, we are a light at the end of the tunnel... Maybe.

She makes them for her polyclay one-of-a-kind originals, but you could easily coat them in wax, model waxes over them. And they could be reused of course!

I just wanted to give readers an update on my earlier post on using my homemade polish/release agent consisting of castor oil and alcohol.
While I have used this myself and have gotten reports from others as well, below is a report from a trusted source that reveals that it doesn't work for all molding compunds:

Here is their experience:

1 part castor oil and 5 parts alcohol does retard/destroy the surface of one of my favorite platinum based RTV silicones. Smooth-On Rebound 25;
the brush on type. Both in a brush on and pressure casting. Might of been able to wash it off a surface or use thinner ratios but it is not worth the risk for my work flow as your waxes polish by other means so
well.

End of comment.

This brings up 2 points:
1) always test first as there are hundred of products and thousands of possible combinations and so testing them all and reporting them are not possible.

2) use the highest grade alcohol possible as the alcohol and castor oil may want to hold any water present in the alcohol tight. And of course the platinum cure silicones are the most sensitive to this issue.

New homemade wax warmer

There are 2 seemingly never-ending questions:
1) Can I use a microwave to warm wax? A: Some find it acceptable, others not.

2) What's the best way to warm wax? A Nearly anyway that provides consistant 115f heat... microwaves tend to be worst performers here... they really don't provide a heat source as they scramble molecules to create heat)

And so I set out to design what I thought is best:
1) Something that can be done fairly inexpensively ( around $60).
2) Something that can be done with off-the-shelf items
3) Something that safe ( but you get the standard disclaimer ... you are responsible for your safety... I made no claims here! )
4) A device that heats top and bottom.
5) A fully adjustable device.

I think this meets all those requirements.

Tammy Update

Just a quick update and a thanks to everyone for their prayers, kind thoughts and words.

I took Tammy to Nashville today to get the stitches removed and a new cast set.

Today is the first time I really got to see the severity of her broken leg.

WOW!!!

The spiral fracture was amazing. Best way I can describe it is:

a) make a paper letter "O" about 2" in diameter
b) Cut it once
c) spread it into a spiral about 1.5" TALL.
d) Now you have a 3-d profile of the fracture in her shin.

I also got to see the post-surgery x-rays and review them with one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the South. She's got 18 screws and a 14" long plate.

The good news is that while she'll be in a wheelchair for another month, the prognosis is very good.

It's been a crazy 4 months:
1) My mom died.
2) Tammy's mother had a breast removed and is now on chemo.
3) Tammy's dad had to have carotid artery surgery.
4) Tammy broke her leg.
5) I got to do all the cooking and cleaning ( whine... whine...whine...)
6) My aunt ( mom's sister) is on death bed, but we got to see her last time this afternoon on way back from Tammy's appointment.

No sympathy requests here.... Just a reminder:
Whoever coined the phrase " If you have your health, you have everything." was as wise as anybody could be!!!

Update!:

Brought Tammy home today after Monday night's surgery. They put a 12" plate down her shin and screwed it in place. She'll be hobbling in a cast for 6-8 weeks.

But she's lucky compared to what it could have been!

I got good result with the laser paper... I just had to scrub a residual layer of wet paper off the wax using soap and a soft toothbrush under running water

Holiday lead time

Since Christmas is just days away, We'd like to go ahead and say "Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all. We'll be working quite a bit through the holidays since we get some time off from the our real source of income..... fulltime jobs. But for Jake and I, that'll be a wonderful break! But this also means that deliveries before Christmas are now not very likely. But since we fill on a first-come-first-serve basis, the sooner you get your order in, the quicker we can deilver... simple as waiting in line, sometimes there's only 2 in front of you....sometimes the line is very long. And of course the lines are long everywhere ( especially at the post office )

This year brings our 3rd year to a close and we thank you all!

Please note that we have always quoted a 2 week lead-time on order fills ( this does not include transit time). We usually beat that lead-time, but since we are only a part-time staff of 2 hard-workers, and it seems that everyone waits a little too late to get their order in, we struggle to keep up with the "feast and famine" pace.

Mom passed today

After 86 years and having survived the great depression, the loss of my dad , the difficulties of raising me as a single and older parent, my mother passed this life.

She had a stroke and for a week battled to survive until Dec. 2nd, my dad's birthday.

Since I am an only child, she is survived by myself, and my 2 adult daughters, Cassi Teague and Christina Overman.

Additionally she is survived by brothers Walter Franklin and EJ Franklin, and sisters Doris Franklin and Edith Winland.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ethan Allen and Icie May Franklin as well as her husband and my father, A.D. (Don) Overman, her oldest sister, Neva Walls, youngest brother, Herman Franklin, and twin sisters Lilly Lambert and Lillian Glascoe.

Services were at Tullahoma Funeral Home and graveside at Maplewood Cemetery.

Thanks to friends and family...

My mom died at 86 on December 2nd ( what would have been my deceased Dad's 88th birthday).

She has suffered a most severe stroke and while it may sound cliche, after watching her pretty much non-stop for over a week, saying the final goodbyes was made easy as it was seen as a blessing of mercy for the whole family.

The pain was also easied by the "ocean" of family, friends, co-workers, Lions Club members, our website customers, and friends from the virtual world of the art forums, who said kind words, prayed, called, visited, sent flowers, sent cards, brought food,and hugged us all.

Sadness shows up at seemily odd times (to me).... but after her last 6 years in a nursing home, there is also relief in her passing.

I can only hope/pray that I inherited some of her "toughness genes".

Ideal product for polishing wax?

I've "discovered" a product called "Fast Orange" by Permatex. It is a water soluble hand cleaner that: a) Contains no petroleum solvents b) is nontoxic c) is biodegradable d) contains aloe, lanolin,glycerin, and Jojoba. What makes it effective as a polish ? Very fine pumice. Loaded onto a soft cloth it becomes a great scratch remover. Wet the surface if the wax with water and it will glide over it. It can be totally removed with water, leaves your work and your hands clean and smelling like an orange! Buy it at any autoparts house for $2.

Loss of a good and close friend.

At 5am this morning our Lions club and community lost a great member and friend.

Rickey Peek passed away suddenly after a brave battle with cancer.

We are still in shock at the suddenness of his passing, but are thankful that his suffering was cut short in what we must believe was an act of mercy that is only recognized when one encounters it directly.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Diane, and their children, Katie and Hunter.

OK, honestly I have been raving about how good Fuse is, but there's a new wax in town.....my hands hurt right now, as I have been working non stop with this new wax ( ZEN).... let me just put it this way, it does honor its name period....it is pure bliss! All good attributes of Fuse, better for detailing, like it even better than Fuse, color is perfect to get that organic feel... how Gary got to this point dunno, don't care, just know it works wonders... no armature required, just great... So here's a sketch I did last night, I have just been very inspired by our resident genius Simon Lee... Head in Silpak Red wax.

After using Calagari Truespace since version 1.0 ..... and after a decade of it being sold for as much as $500 ..... You can now download the latest version free just for "registering" on-line. This is not a timelimited or downgraded version, full-up power. Be warned that it does have a learning curve because it is 4d ( realtime 3d + time) . They are also giving away complete on-line manuals and VIDEO training. As I understand it, Microsoft bought Calagari and wants to make it the new standard for 3d mapping and virtual reality and are doing so by giving it away. I downloaded, installed it and ran a few tests in about an hour. Don't pass up this freebie! ZEN - New Video

Just an update on how the new product testing for ZEN is going....

I'm going to be using ZEN for my next art endeavor. And since that will be tiles for an architectural commission, I needed to start with some flat wax panels on which to start carving and modeling.

I melted and poured ZEN onto wooden plates using metal tape to form temporary walls to contain the wax.

Another video added... just a little fun showing that one doesn't need fancy tools or studio to work wax.

It was really hot in car. And I don't think this should make anyone worry about heat during transport of work provided it's packed well. Erick Sosa has made a point that FUSE ships well and it is a tad softer than this new "ZEN"

New product video

Here's a new product I'm working on... please note that it is not quite ready for sell yet.

I'm out on travel and may not be able to respond to questions and coorespondance as usual.

Please be patient. Video says no name yet, but "ZEN" appears to be a favorite.

I really really like this one!

Color is to appease many who have been asking for a more "human" color. Additional colors may follow this one since it's formulation is open to options unlike previous products.
